  • Freight train 79213 loaded with nearly 200 motorcycles set off from Guangdong#39;s Foshan railway freight station at 11 a.m. on Jan. 26. This is the first freight train carrying motorcycles in the history of China for Spring Festival.1月26日上午11点,装载着近200台托车的79213次货运专列从广东佛山铁路货运站驶出。 The freight train is set for the migrant workers who ride thousand miles home by motorcycles during the Spring Festival. The first train departed from Foshan of Guangdong province on Jan. 26 is expected to arrive at Guigang, Guangxi, on Jan. 27. In recent years, some migrant workers in Guangdong from Guangxi, Hunan and Guizhou provinces braved the cold to ride a thousand miles back home, due to not being able to buy train tickets or needing to use motorcycles after returning home. The Guangzhou Railway Group specifically organized a freight train this year so that the motorcycles could also be taken home. Lu Shangfeng, deputy director of the Guangzhou Foshan Railway Freight Center, said that it is the first that a freight train is arranged to carry motorcycles in the history of railways in China. As the gasoline inside the motorcycles is flammable, all motorcycle fuel tanks have been emptied before the shipment. The train cars will be well ventilated at the same time. To ensure the safety of this novel consignment, the railway sector organized experts and technical staff to conduct feasibility studies and ultimately determine the loading reinforcement program. Before implementing the program, the railway sector has made three loading tests on five motorcycles. /201602/425377
  • China’s lofty property prices are prompting the country’s tech titans to revive old-school communist policies and help put a roof over their employees’ heads. While a few decades ago workers were housed in basic accommodation owned by the state, today some of China’s biggest private companies are doling out interest-free loans and subsidies to enable workers to buy their own homes. Alibaba and Tencent, two of the country’s internet trinity, are among those helping employees buy apartments. Tencent, the social media group headquartered in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen, offers interest-free loans of up to Rmb500,000 (,629) for purchases in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou — home to some of the country’s priciest real estate — and up to Rmb250,000 in other cities. Alibaba has gone a step further, building 380 apartments on its campus in Hangzhou — an hour’s train ride from Shanghai — and holding a lottery that gave winning employees the right to buy an apartment at roughly two-thirds the market price. While the government late last year implemented measures to cool prices, including lifting the minimum deposit required and cracking down on purchases of second homes, Chinese homes are among the world’s least affordable and those in top-tier cities rose 20-30 per cent last year. 30%。CBRE Research estimates it takes 20 years of average net household income to buy a flat in most of China’s top cities. These costs mean “it’s a struggle for many companies to retain top talent”, says Joe Zhou, head of research at property group JLL China. But he adds that few companies have the financial might of the tech groups to make similar offers. Last year an average central Shanghai apartment, of 120-130 sq m, cost Rmb15m (.2m), according to property consultancy JLL, up from Rmb2.4m a decade ago. This is one of the biggest issues for entrepreneurs and employees in the city, known as Asia’s Silicon Valley and home to some 11m people. “Young people?.?.?.?can’t hope to buy a home in Shenzhen,” says Glenn Zhu, founder and chief executive of Shenzhen-based Iown, who graduated 13 years ago thinking he would be a homeowner within five years. “That’s a big problem.” Efforts to retain staff by offering home buying incentives is not restricted to the biggest tech players. Smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has teamed up with China Vanke, one of the country’s biggest real estate developers, to build flats in Beijing that will be offered to employees, reportedly at steep discounts. /201704/506694
  • European news publishers will be given the right to levy fees on internet platforms such as Google if search engines show snippets of their stories, under radical copyright reforms being finalised by the European Commission. The proposals, to be published in September, are aimed at diluting the power of big online operators, whose market share in areas such as search leads to unbalanced commercial negotiations between search engines and content creators, according to officials. The move will heap further pressure on the strained relationship between Silicon Valley and Brussels, which are embroiled in increasingly fractious arguments over issues covering competition, tax and privacy. This week, the US Treasury department attacked commission moves to levy billions of euros from Apple for alleged underpayment of taxes in Europe. Under the draft copyright plan, news publishers would receive “exclusive rights” to make their content online available to the public in a move that would force services such as Google News to agree terms with news organisations for showing extracts of articles. Citing dwindling revenues at news organisations, the commission warns that failure to act would be “prejudicial for#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;media pluralism”, according to one internal document. Critics of the idea argue that similar efforts to charge Google for aggregating news stories have failed in both Germany and Spain. Google responded to a mandatory levy in Spain by shutting down Google News in the country. In Germany, many publishers opted to waive the charge in order still to appear on the search engine’s news results after suffering big drops in traffic. Julia Reda, a German MEP and copyright reform activist, said: “They recognise that German and Spanish rights did not work well, but structurally they are trying to do the same thing.” But she said the size of Google would make it hard for publishers to reach a deal even with the exclusive right. “It is insane to believe that [they] would win this battle,” she said. Google declined to comment. Under the proposals, news publishers would not be obliged to levy a fee for an aggregator to show a segment of content, and could offer it free. Officials have made clear that simply linking to publicly available content is not covered by the EU’s copyright rules — a fact that will not change under the proposals. Christian Wigand, a spokesperson for Brussels, said: “Let#39;s be clear; granting such rights to news publishers would not affect the way users share hyperlinks on the internet. It would recognise their role as investors in content.” Elsewhere in an impact assessment of the proposed reforms, Google was held up as an example to be followed. Under the new rules, user-generated sites would have to introduce tech-nology to identify copyright-protected work, similar to that which Google-owned YouTube aly employs. /201608/463226
  • More than 1,370 people aged 60 or over go missing every day in China, according to a new report. The White Paper on the Lost Elderly, released last Sunday, states that Alzheimer#39;s disease and other forms of dementia are a major cause of such disappearances. 72% of senior citizens reported missing have trouble with their memory, while 25% have been diagnosed with Alzheimer#39;s, according to Xiong Guibin, co-author of the report, which was jointly issued by Zhongmin Social Assistance Institute and online content aggregator Toutiao. What is compounding the problem in China is the large number of elderly people living alone in less-developed rural areas, whose relatives have migrated to cities to find better-paying jobs. These people are at greater risk, the report warned. The report calls for the establishment of a national network to record and find missing people, and recommends that aid centers arrange specialist personnel to look for missing persons. It also suggests that local governments in areas with large population outflows cooperate with social groups to assess the living conditions of seniors citizens left at home, and explore effective methods to prevent such citizens from going missing. /201610/470461
  • American politics has long been conducted in the shadow of violence. Two of the country’s most celebrated presidents — Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy — were assassinated. During the 1968 presidential election campaign, Bobby Kennedy was also assassinated, five years after the killing of his brother and two months after the murder of Martin Luther King, the civil rights leader. Ronald Reagan was also shot and wounded in the early years of his presidency. It is this history of political violence that makes Donald Trump’s suggestion that American gun owners could somehow stop Hillary Clinton so incendiary and dangerous. It is difficult to listen to the Republican nominee’s remarks and to regard them as anything other than an oblique, but unmistakable, suggestion that somebody might try to kill his Democratic rival rather than see her appoint liberal judges to the Supreme Court. The Trump campaign’s spin that he was merely appealing to “Second Amendment people” to get out and vote is unconvincing. The statement was made in the context of a discussion of how the US would look once Mrs Clinton had been elected and started appointing judges. There would, said Mr Trump, be “nothing you can do” — before musing aloud, “although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is”. The word “irresponsible” barely covers this latest outrageous statement. Mr Trump has aly allowed an atmosphere of violence to fester around his campaign. He has encouraged supporters to beat up hecklers and said that he wanted to punch speakers at the Democratic convention, “so hard their heads would spin”. At the Republican convention, the Trump campaign had to disavow a delegate’s suggestion that Mrs Clinton should be “shot for treason”. Mr Trump now has a well-established record of making outrageous statements and then claiming that he has been misinterpreted. He mocked a disabled reporter — and then denied it. He suggested that another journalist had asked him tough questions because she was menstruating — and then denied it. In the same speech in which he talked of the “Second Amendment” people taking action against Mrs Clinton, he once again flirted with the conspiracy theory that Antonin Scalia, a conservative Supreme Court judge, had been murdered. Some will suggest that Mr Trump’s latest ramblings are further proof that he is deranged or out of control. But the truth may be rather more sinister. The Republican candidate has become a specialist in appealing to the wildest fringes of the American right by making statements that are clearly understood by them and by a wider audience but that are also just about deniable. Opinion polls suggest that this appalling strategy is not going to deliver Mr Trump success at the ballot box. But the fear must be that they will further poison the political atmosphere in the US and encourage the kind of political violence with which Mr Trump is now flirting. /201608/460162
