MrPan There is a hill near my home that I often climb at night. The noise of the city is a far-off murmur. In the hush of dark I share the cheerfulness of crickets and the confidence of owls. But it is the drama of the moonrise that I come to see.不过,我上山是来看月出的 that restores in me a quiet and clarity that the city spends too freely. From this hill I have watched many moons rise. Each one had its own mood. There have been broad, confident harvest moons in autumn; shy, misty moons in spring; lonely, white winter moons rising into the utter silence of an ink-black sky and smoke-smudged orange moons over the dry fields of summer. Each, like fine music, excited my heart and then calmed my soul. But we, who live indoors, have lost contact with the moon. The glare of street lights and the dust of pollution veil the night sky. Though men have walked on the moon, it grows less familiar. Few of us can say what time the moon will rise tonight. Still, it tugs at our minds. If we unexpectedly encounter the full moon, huge and yellow over the horizon, we are helpless but to stare back at its commanding presence. And the moon has gifts to bestow upon those who watch. Moonlight shows us none of life’s harder edges. Hillsides seem silken and silvery, the oceans still and blue in its light. In moonlight we become less calculating, more drawn to our feelings. Oliver was now officially an undertaker;s assistant. It was a good, sickly time of year, and coffins were selling well. Oliver gained a lot of experience in a short time, and was interested to see how brave some people were after a death in the family. During funerals some rich people, example, he saw that the people who had cried the loudest in church usually recovered the fastest afterwards. He noticed how in other wealthy families the wife or the husband often seemed quite cheerful and calm despite the recent death-just as if nothing had happened. Oliver was very surprised to see all this, and greatly admired them controlling their sadness so well. Eg. At commencement, academic degrees are officially given. Eg, He looked weak and sickly. Eg. He now fully recovered from his stroke. Eg. Afterwards she relented and let the children stay up late to watch TV. Eg. Whether (she is) sick or fine, she is always cheerful. After his wife death, he fell into a decline. If someone wants to become a good tennis player, example, he will get out on the court and play very hard. Everyone in church knelt in prayer. We made a funeral our mother after she died. In a short time, I suddenly came to understand a lot. I admire him his success in business. 1. a good time of year:好年景. a sickly time of year:疾病成灾的年月3. gain experience:积累经验. after a death in the family:在一个家庭成员的死亡后5. a wealthy family:富裕的家庭6. recent death:进来才死去7. control one’s sadness:抑制住悲桑不外露第四、语法点拨1. ...he saw that the people who had cried the loudest in church usually recovered the fastest afterwards. ... just as if nothing had happened.

The men and women of Anglo-Saxon England normally bore one name only. These might be patronymic, descriptive or occupational. They were, however, hardly surnames. Heritable names gradually became general in the three centuries following the Norman Conquest in . It was not until the th and th centuries that surnames became fixed, although many years after that, the degree of stability in family names varied considerably in different parts of the country. A few names, it is true, will remain puzzling的确,仍然有少数名字是令人费解的,eign names, perhaps, crudely translated, adapted or abbreviated;or artificial names. In fact, over fifty per cent of genuine British surnames derive from place names of different kinds, and so they belong to the last of our four main categories. Even such a name as Simpson may belong to this last group, and not to the first, had the family once had its home in the ancient village of that name. Otherwise, Simpson means the son of Simon,as might be expected. Hundreds of occupational surnames are at once familiar to us,or at least recognisable after a little thought几百个职业姓氏对我们来说都是很熟悉的,或者至少稍加思考就可以辨认出来Archer, Carter, Fisher, Mason, Thatcher, Taylor,to name but a few. Hundreds of others are more obscure in their meanings and testify to the amazing specialisation in medieval arts, crafts and functions. Such are Day,and Walker. All these vocational names carry with them a certain gravity and dignity, which descriptive names often lack. Some, it is true, like Long, Short or Little, are simple. They may be taken quite literally. Others require more thinkingtheir meanings are slightly different from the modern ones. Black and White implied dark and fair respectively. Sharp meant genuinely discerning, alert, acute rather than quick-witted or clever. Place-names have a lasting interest since there is hardly a town or village in all England that has not at some time given its name to a family. They may be picturesque, even poetical;or they may be pedestrian, even trivial. Among the commoner names which survive with relatively little change from old-English times are Milton and Hilton.

When the people of Hamelin, Germany had a problem with rats, they called the Pied Piper. With his bewitching pipe and enchanting music, he lured the rats away from the city and into a watery grave. But when the people of Hamelin refused to pay the Pied Piper what they had promised, he turned his entrancing music on their children, leading them away to never be seen again. This key moment in a familiar fairy tale carries many insights. It is, at once, a commentary on social values, a vivid example of family tragedy, and a bit of personal psychology. Folklore is compacted wisdom-literature that yields more inmation with each ing. There is much we can learn by reflecting on the stories heard in childhood. Magical characters are likely to remain in the imagination a lifetime. Fairytale is a sub-genre of folktale, something that is handed down from person to person generations; one of the most important identifying features of a folktale is that it belongs to an entire culture, rather than to an individual. That is why folktales give us many insights into the cultures from which they spring. My own first hearing of many of the old stories was in the places where they originated. Throughout my childhood our family would travel abroad several months every few years. There were six children. My parents came up with an ingenious and life-changing idea have us study the local tales. When we were in Denmark, we visited the home of Hans Christian Andersen, and discussed his stories, such as The Little Mermaid. In Germany, we went to the village of Hamelin, where the tale of the Pied Piper takes place. In Baghdad, it was Arabian Nights. In the temples of India and Japan, the tales of Asia came to life. Seeing how the adventures reflected their settings and how the stories are still alive in those places was a powerful experience. Various people can imagine the tales quite differently. I had heard the stories bee and had pictures in my mind about what the places looked like. When I saw, example, the spot in Germany where the Pied Piper supposedly led the children away, it didnrsquo;t look exactly the same as I had imagined. In a way, noticing that difference made me aware of how our creativity works. It shaped my sense of the world. I later learned how these stories portray life issues in miniature. These tales are psychological mirrors that can become more complex as we mature. Bedtime stories have enormous influence over our identities. People identify with certain characters in the stories they heard in childhood. To some degree, many live out these stories, largely unaware of how much the old tales may be shaping our lives. The story of the Pied Piper reminds us that every parent has to deal with letting go of their children and every mer child has to cope with feelings about what it means to leave home. If we take the tale as a reflection of the inner landscape, we see that all the characters can represent aspects of our own personalities. The village leaders may symbolize a practical, thrifty side that does not sufficiently appreciate our magical qualities or artistic abilities. If we cheat the imagination of appropriate time and resources, things may go badly. Creativity and play engage the childlike energies that can leave us in a state of depression if they depart. Mythic stories make up a kind of collective dream that we all have together. If we want to understand our dreams, in many respects, we can look at these stories and study them. A talking animal in a story is often the voice of nature. Among other messages, we are being reminded that we are also animals. We are walking around in animal flesh. We sometimes get this in our excessively mental, all too industrial culture. We are, first of all, animal creatures. We are not just visitors to nature, or merely caretakers of nature. We are nature. Guiding animals are crucial in mythic stories. Psychologically, this might well represent the wisdom of the body. Meanwhile, sinister or wicked characters may represent aspects of ourselves that have been neglected or rejected. The ancient tales have their own lives, each with unique, eccentric qualities. Part of the richness is that the same story will have different lessons each listener. Stories can speak to us in several ways The practical aspects of our personalities appreciate the assistance provided in prudent decision-making. Our playful energies find the stories to be great fun. The quiet, spiritual side is grateful to have some time invested in reflection. The effects of what we learn might last a lifetime.

I need to plug in some numbers here, but I can’t make heads or tails of this. Dolores: Yes, I think so, but I also need to know our net income. Anton: Here is the bottom line. That takes into all of the revenue and expenses during the third quarter. It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many ofthe leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men untunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. The other day a fond fashionable mother in Michigan asked a young manwhether he had ever seen ayoung lady sweep in a room so grandly as her Priscilla. He said no,he never had, and the mother was gratified beyond measure, but then he said, after a pause,“What I should like to see her do is sweep out a room.”It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. Iwould not give a fig the young man who does not aly see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or eman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scatteredtheir brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said aim the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interestyours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, as Emerson says, “no one can cheatyou out of ultimate success but yourselves.” 55

The lack of opporty is ever the excuse of a weak, vacillating mind. Opporties! Every life is full of them. Every lesson in school or college is an opporty. Every examination is a chance in life. Every businesstransaction is an opporty-an opporty to be polite, an opporty to be manly, an opprty to behonest, an opprty to make friends. Every proof of confidence in you is a great opporty. Every responsibility thrust upon your strength and your honor is priceless. Existence is the privilege of eft, andwhen that privilege is met like a man, opporties to succeed along the line of your aptitude will come faster than you can use them.Young men and women, why do you stand here all the day idle? Was the land all occupied bee you were born?Has the earth ceased to yield its increase? Are the seats all taken? The positions all filled? the chances all gone? are the resources of your country fully developed? Are the secrets of nature all mastered? Isthere no way in which you can utilize these passing moments to improve yourself or benefit another? Dont wait your opporty. Make it, make it as Napoleon made his in a hundred ;impossible; situations. Make it, as all leaders of men , in war and in peace, have made their chaces of success.
