People who have been surfing the Internet for a long time may have dozens of avatars that they#39;ve created over the years, but more often than not, they say that the first avatar you create is the most like yourself. Itrsquo;s also common for people to create an avatar who is the opposite of them, a virtual alter ego. Either way, when we create a character instinctually, it reveals enormous amounts about our sensitivities, personality and priorities. That is called avatar personality. A micro blog post that defines aura fields for different types of avatars has gone viral. It goes like this: A woman with a weak aura field will most likely have an avatar of a mighty female, a woman with a strong aura field will use her own photo as avatar; a man with a strong aura field usually chooses comic figures as his avatar, while a weak man#39;s avatar often is a photo of himself. /201112/164916

Europe has moved a step closer to putting a health halo on dark chocolate. On Tuesday, the world#39;s largest chocolate manufacturer, Barry Callebaut , won the backing of the European Food Safety Authority for its claim that cocoa flavanols, or compounds that can also be found in dark chocolate, can be good for blood circulation. While the request to use the health claim still awaits approval from the European Commission, the food agency#39;s blessing indicates that confection makers including Nestle SA and Kraft Foods Inc., which markets the Cadbury brand overseas, may soon be able to make a health claim on product labels. A final decision is expected at the beginning of next year. Barry Callebaut, one of the world#39;s largest buyers of cocoa, says the health claim could be applied by its customers to the packages for customers including Nestle and Kraft. The company predicts considerable market potential for applications in items like chocolate drinks, cereal bars and cookies. Barry Callebaut#39;s customers using high-flavanol cocoa products would be able to apply the claim on their products and packaging. To back up its request, the Swiss company last year submitted evidence that the intake of 200 milligrams of cocoa flavanols a day contributes to normal blood flow. That#39;s a small portion, as 200 milligrams of cocoa flavanols would be found in 10 grams-a mere 0.35 oz.-of high-flavanol dark chocolate. Flavanols have been shown to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow and reduce heart-disease risk at least in part by stimulating production of nitric oxide, which relaxes vessels. Chocolate bars also include sugar and fat, however. Barry Callebaut carried out more than 20 clinical studies looking at effects of cocoa flavanols on people since 2005, using cocoa powder and chocolate products made through a special process it developed that preserves up to 80% of flavanols, which would be mostly destroyed in conventional chocolate-making procedures. With the backing of the European food authority, Barry Callebaut is the first company in the 27-member bloc to obtain an official validation of the positive effects of cocoa flavanols. If it gets approval from the EU Commission, the chocolate maker would be granted the right to use the cocoa flavanols claim for five years within EU countries. Kraft, which sells Cadbury overseas and not in the U.S., said, #39;We support the use of health claims on all product categories as long as these are truthful, not misleading, and appropriately supported by qualified scientists.#39; Hershey Co. has touted that its namesake Cocoa and Special Dark versions of chocolates are natural sources of flavanol antioxidants.

The Devil, also known as Satan in Judaism and Christianity, is an evil spirit that opposes God or good spirits. It is usually identified with Lucifer, an angel who tried to rebel against God and so fell from heaven to hell to suffer there forever. He is considered as the ruler of the underworld, or hell, where he has many followers to help him in sping evil throughout the world. His followers, called devils, were lesser angels who fell with Lucifer. The Devil tempts people to be wicked. He is the chief Tempter. Sometimes the religious belief in devils is combined with folklore about ghosts and demons. In many works of art and literature, Satan and other devils are pictured with goat’s horns, bat’s wings, split hooves, and a barbed tail, to show that the Devil is like a beast, cruel, gross, and savage. Many modern theologians consider the Devil to be a symbol of the power of evil, of the worst qualities of human nature, or of the destructive forces in the universe. /201108/148221How Bad Are iPods for Your Hearing?Hearing loss is more common than ever before. About 16% of American adults have an impaired ability to hear speech, and more than 30% of Americans over age 20 — an estimated 55 million people — have lost some high-frequency hearing, according to a new study published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The finding has got experts — and concerned parents — wondering anew: Does listening to loud music through headphones lead to long-term hearing loss? Brian Fligor, director of diagnostic audiology at Children's Hospital Boston, explains how much damage your headphone habit might cause — and how to mitigate your risk. Q: How much hearing loss does an iPod cause?A: It depends on the person, it depends on how long you're listening, and it depends on the level at which you're setting your iPod.Q:iPod在多大程度上导致了听力丧失?A:那取决于个人,取决于你每次听音乐多长时间,以及你在iPod上设置的音量水平。If you're using the earbuds that come with an iPod and you turn the volume up to about 90% of maximum and you listen a total of two hours a day, five days a week, our best estimates are that the people who have more sensitive ears will develop a rather significant degree of hearing loss — on the order of 40 decibels (dB). That means the quietest sounds audible are 40 dB loud. Now, this is high-pitched hearing loss, so a person can still hear sounds and understand most speech. The impact is going to be most clearly noted when the background-noise level goes up, when you have to focus on what someone is saying. Then it can really start to impair your ability to communicate. This would happen only after about 10 years or so or even more of listening to a personal audio device. One patient I had used his headphones instead of earplugs when he was on his construction job. He thought as long as he could hear his music over the sound of his saws, he was protecting his ears — because he liked the sound of his music but didn't like the sound of the construction noise. He had a good 50 dB to 55 dB of noise-induced hearing loss at 28 years old. We asked a few pointed questions about when he was having difficulty understanding people, and his response was classic. "When I'm sitting at home with the TV off, I can understand just fine," he said, "but when I go out for dinner, I have trouble." There is huge variation in how people are affected by loud sound, however, and this is an area where a number of researchers are conducting studies. Certainly a huge part of this is underlying genetics. We know how much sound causes how much hearing loss based on studies that were conducted in the late '60s and early '70s, before employers were required to protect workers' hearing in noisy work environments. What was found is that when people are exposed to a certain level of noise every day for a certain duration, they're going to have a certain degree of hearing loss on average. But the amount of hearing loss might differ by as much as 30 dB between people who had the toughest ears and those with the most tender ones — a huge variation. Unfortunately, we don't know who has the tougher ears and who has the tender ones until after they've lost their hearing. So, as a clinician, I have to treat everyone as if they had tender ears. /200902/63068

Although I love that journalism allows me to dabble in a range of topics, I miss the thrill of structured, focused education. I#39;m not talking about going back to school full-time for a degree program, but taking a course or even ing a book to learn something just for the sake of it, such as a new language or skill. They found that compared with those born at term, young adults born very premature - at less than 32 weeks#39; gestation - were more than twice as likely to be hospitalized for schizophrenia or delusional disorders, almost three times as likely for major depression, and more than seven times as likely for bipolar illness. The lead author, Chiara Nosarti, a senior lecturer in neuroimaging at Kings College London, emphasized that while the increase in relative risk is substantial, the absolute increase in numbers of people with the illnesses is not. ;Despite these findings,; she said, ;the majority of people born preterm have no psychiatric problems, and the number of people hospitalized with psychiatric disease is very low.;;尽管有着这样的调查结果,;她说,;但其实大部分早产的人并没有精神疾病,因精神疾病入院就医的人也很少。;Still, she added, ;routine screening may help to detect early signs of illness.;但是,她又说道:;例行的检查能够帮助发现疾病的早期症状。;The risk also increased for people born late preterm, or 32 to 36 weeks#39; gestation, but not as sharply. They were 60 percent more likely to be admitted for schizophrenia or delusional disorders, 34 percent more likely for depressive disorder, and about twice as likely to be hospitalized for bipolar illness. The researchers acknowledge that the findings could be affected by factors they could not control for, including unmeasured sociodemographic factors, a family history of preterm delivery, maternal substance abuse or smoking, and bacterial or viral infections. But experts not involved in the study were impressed with the work. ;This is an important, expertly executed epidemiological study,; said Catherine Monk, an associate professor of clinical psychology at Columbia who conducts research in perinatal psychiatry and neuroscience. ;It provides compelling evidence that our mental health trajectories are initiated early in development.;但那些并没参与这项研究的专家们则是对这份研究印象深刻。 ;Dr. Monk, too, noted that the study did not mean that being born prematurely inevitably leads to mental illness. ;The risk found is still low in an absolute sense, and finally it, too, can be modified by other factors in the child#39;s development,; she said.;从绝对意义上来讲,患病几率仍然是很小,并且,患病几率也能被个体儿童时期发展中的其他因素所改变。;Dr. Bradley Peterson, director of the Center for Developmental Neuropsychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, said the size of the sample was ;stunning; and ;allows very strong levels of confidence that the findings are not spurious.;纽约州精神病学研究所发展神经精神病学中心主任布兰得利? ; /201207/190005
