  • Public speaking is a regular — and regularly feared — part of life, so it#39;s important to refine your skills. Here are four tips to help you polish your public speaking。 1. Assess yourself. What part of public speaking makes you nervous? Where have you slipped up in the past? One reason public speaking is so nerve-racking is because there#39;s so much to manage — your presence, your words, your delivery, and your reaction. Determine your weakest points, from stuttering to stiff hands, in order to tailor your speech improvement。1. 2. Find opportunities to practice. It#39;s hard to feel confident about speaking if it#39;s something you rarely do, so look for the chance to polish your technique in everyday life. At a dinner party? Offer to give the toast. Working on a new project at the office? Present it at the weekly staff meeting. Public speaking is like anything else: the more you do it, the better you#39;ll become。2. 3. Dress the part. Confidence is crucial, and you#39;ll be much more sure of yourself if you know that your appearance conveys a sense of authority. It#39;s important to look put-together, and the focus should be on your words, not your outfit。3. 4. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Begin with standard prep techniques, like writing note cards and practicing in front of your friends, but also take the time to do some research. Find out as much as you can about your audience, the environment, and the tools and media that will be available. Most importantly, be sure that you#39;re achieving what was asked of you — confirm that you#39;re answering the right question and fulfilling the expectations of your audience。4. Above all else, learn to relax. Everyone understands the stress and pressure involved with public speaking, so know that your audience will be empathetic toward your efforts. Just remember the basics — to stand up straight, smile, and make eye contact — and be yourself, because genuine enthusiasm are key to making great connections。
Working long hours has a greater negative impact on women than men because it makes them more likely to smoke, drink coffee and eat unhealthy food. Both sexes consume less alcohol if they spend more time working, researchers said, buttoilingextra hours makes women crave unhealthy snacks."Women who work long hours eat more high-fat and high-sugar snacks, exercise less, drink more caffeine and, if smokers, smoke more than their male colleagues," said Dr. Daryl O'Connor, a researcher at Britain's Leeds University."For men, working longer hours has no negative impact on exercise, caffeine intake or smoking," O'Connor said in a statement released by the Economic and Social Research Council, which funded his study.O'Connor's team of scientists were studying the impact of stress on eating habits. They looked at what causes stress at home and at work and how people react to it.The results show that stressful events such as making a presentation, a meeting with the boss or missing a deadline were linked to eating more between-meal snacks and fewer or smaller portions of fruits and vegetables."Stress disrupts people's normal eating habits," he said. The people who were most vulnerable were so-called emotional eaters."These individuals have higher levels of vulnerability and tend to turn to food as an escape from self-awareness," O'Connor said."When they feel anxious or emotionally aroused or negative about themselves, they try to avoid these negative feelings by turning their attention to food." /200803/32258
  • Three sons discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said, ;I built a big house for our mother.;The second said, ;I sent her a Mercedes with a driver.;The third smiled and said, ;I#39;ve got you both beat. Remember how mom enjoyed ing the Bible? And you know she can#39;t see very well. I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it.; Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks. She wrote one son, ;the house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.; She wrote to another, ;I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes.; ;Dearest Donald,; she wrote to her third son, ;you have the good sense to know what your mother likes. /201303/230115

While one user of the Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo suggested the duo looked like the bride and groom at their own wedding, others were less restrained. “I admit my mind is in the gutter,” wrote one microblogger. “The first time I looked, all I saw was…” 一位微用户写道,我承认我的想法有点脏,可是第一次看到照片时,我心里想的全是……The couple have frequently come under public scrutiny in the U.S. Ms. Catsimatidis is the daughter of Gristedes supermarket chain owner John Catsimatidis. They met in 2008 and married in 2011. Mr. Cox said the couple is not fazed by reactions in China, and says his wife is enjoying this, her second visit, to the country. “She loves Beijing. People have been very warm and hospitable to her,” he said. “We’re all ambassadors for the U.S.” Mr. Cox also said the excitement around his wife hadn’t detracted from the key finding of his trip: that China increasingly wants to engage with the U.S. As evidence, he points to the welcome he has received from high-level officials, including a banquet for around 175 people at the Great Hall of the People, where he met with former foreign minister and State Councilor Yang Jiechi. Mr. Cox believes the new government led by Xi Jinping wants to take relations with Washington to new heights. “This is part of China’s natural progress to grow on the world stage as an ascending power,” he said. “It’s encouraging.” Mr. Cox, who has attended many Chinese banquets in the past he’s visited Beijing around 15 times so far─was expecting copious toasts. But President Xi’s antigraft touch was evident in the banquet’s relative absence of alcohol, he noted. “In honor of my grandfather they brought out Moutai,” he said. “The toast was important but they did not emphasize drinking.” Former President Nixon was fascinated by Moutai a throat-searing grain alcohol that bills itself as China’s national liquor ─ and reportedly went against aides’ advice by partaking in rounds of toasting, including with then Premier Zhou Enlai. Mr. and Mrs. Cox’s trip is organized by the Nixon Foundation and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. After stops in Beijing and Hangzhou, they and an accompanying delegation of around 40 people will visit Shanghai. Mr. Cox, a partner at consultancy and investment advisory firm OC Global Partners, LLC, finished third in the 2010 Republican primary for the New York’s 1st congressional district. On whether he will run for political office in the future, Mr. Cox said “there might be something down the road.” International trips, such as this week’s visit to China, and another to Africa last summer with former President Bill Clinton, were helpful in that they offered into insights into foreign policy and governing, he said. To that, we might add protocol, too. /201305/238590
